Purpose

  • To gain hands-on experience in using a wiki
  • LCD is useful but not necessary

Equipment Needed

  • Computers with good connection to the internet

Planning

  • Create a wiki page
  • Create accounts for all participants
  • Create a page for each participant (or group of participants if they are sharing a computer)
  • Know the wiki's syntax well!
  • Decide what content participants will enter into the wiki. If the participants are working in the same field, identify a topic that is of interest to the group. Otherwise, consider entering favourite recipes (to create a workshop cookbook) or participant biographies.

Instructions

  • Explain to participants that they are going to create their own wiki page on the chosen topic.

NYNKE to add formatting process here

  • use text formatting
  • insert a hyperlink
  • create a sub page
  • advanced users: create table.
  • etc.

Debrief/Reflections

  • Invite participants to share reflections observations on the exercise. Don't rush the session. You may want to do a tour du table ie. give everyone a chance to share a reflection/observation.
  • Use facilitation techniques such as 'drawing people out' and 'paraphrasing'
  • Record the observations on a flipchart (or in a wiki!)

Tips for Instructors

  • Know the wiki software well ie. take a PBWiki Tour. Remember that different wikis have different syntax rules
  • Ideally, each participants should have their own computer. Try to avoid having more than 2 people per computer. If this is unavoidable, you may want to remind participants to give each other a chance to 'be behind the wheel' ie. typing.
