TITLE: How I became an ICT guru

NAME OF ORIGINAL TELLER: Mr. Lule Tonny

NAME OF LISTENERS/UNDERSTANDERS: Mr. Floyd Mwenda

1. LANDSCAPE

How I became an ICT guru is a story about maximising time with ICTs. This true story happened between 2000 to date after when he was introduced to IICD (International Institute for Communication and Development).

2. DWELLING PLACE

It was started when IICD approached his organisation to become a Training Partner in Kampala, Uganda.

3. CHARACTERS

Mr. Marcel Warner (Country Programme Manager, IICD) and Drs. Arjan de Jager, (Capacity Development Programme Manager, IICD) interested him into understanding, liking and applying ICTs in a development context.

4. CHALLENGE

With the little knowledge on effective use of computers, IICD compelled him into implementing activities that greatly involved computers and ICTs in general.

Working with IICD, automatically required him to continuously research about ICTs and develop competence in the proper utilisation of ICTs for development (ICT4D).

5. ACTION

  • Tonny was nominated as a National Trainer in 2001.

  • Attended his first IICD sponsored workshop at Rank Consult on ICTs in Business.

  • Later in 2001, attended a two-weeks Train-the-Trainer workshop in Tanzania.
  • Later in the year, he organised his first workshop on Open Source Awareness.
  • He has attended a number of IICD training events and has also conducted many technical training tracks for IICD supported projects and the public.
  • Because of this exposure, he is being referred to as a computer guru.
  • And many prefer dealing with him to an extent that he now operates a brief case company (Enhanced IT Solutions).

6. RESOLUTION

ICT if well handle, it empowers and brings a lot of positive change at the organisational/community and individual level. Continuous training is necessary since ICTs are dynamic.

Change is a continuous process that must be well handled with varying focus.
