This was the first online (Skype) planning meeting for the workshop due in Kampala from December 12-14. Although we hoped to VOIP via Skype, Clare had a problem hearing us, as a result we resorted to text chat.

Below are issues we discussed:

Present

  1. Abu (Note taker)
  2. Clare (Chairperson)
  3. Saskia

Agenda

  1. Selection criteria
  2. AOB

Item 1: Selection criteria

In order to scan, review and select participants to the workshop, criteria needed to be set, which according to Clare would consider the following:

  • Experience in ICT4D training
  • Experience in web 2.0
  • Ability to pass on knowledge

Matters arising:

  • In their motivation letters applicants should also be able to demonstrate interest and dedication.

  • Need to know how to deal with applicants that don’t have training background but have a lot of experience to share. Participation shouldn’t be tied on applicants having hardcore training skills but rather experience they can share as a result of using and deploying web2.0 tools.

  • People should not attend as students but rather have something they bring to the workshop in terms of experience to share

  • Traditional ICT training styles aren’t the best way to enable persons/organisations to take on Web2, as a result people who aren’t hardcore trainers can still be appropriate to evangelise web2.0 in order to assist organisations take them on.

  • The workshop is not about training people who just want to learn about web2.0 tools but rather people who want to learn how to pass on Web2.0 knowledge

  • Fear that some applicants who sent motivation letters sounded like they just wanted to attend this event to be trained themselves, and didn’t really understand what this knowledge sharing workshop intends to do.

  • Some organisations or people in Uganda that didn’t send a motivation letter so long as they would be very valuable to the workshop should be contacted personally—reason being that they would have a lot to share but would also add value to the community in future.

  • Workshop shouldn’t be about raising numbers but rather participants that would add value. Just raising numbers of participants for its sake will bring down the quality of interaction, and might frustrate those that have a clear value and are investing their time and effort to be present.

Action

  • Abu to contact BROSDI (Ednah Karamagi) as one of the organisations in Uganda that have a lot of experience to share following their rousing presentation at the Web2.0 Conference in Italy.

  • Clare to follow up on Julius Elora’s organisation

  • Saskia to follow up IICD partners in Uganda

  • Members to collectively identify other organisations or persons in Uganda that would add value to the workshop by end of Monday next week (November 26).

  • Abu to look at motivation letters that either Saskia or Clare was not sure about their value. This would help in giving additional opinion for their qualification or disqualification.

  • Letters of those who qualified to be sent by November 28.

  • Deadline for receiving new letters set for November 28

Item 2: Programme/Agenda

  • Due to time constraint, workshop agenda or programme should be crafted.

  • Programme to be built so that people are comfortable to share and also go increasingly in-depth to really get the practical details out.

  • Programme/agenda needs to be finalised by next week.

Action

  • Clare and Saskia to take the lead on coming up with the first draft of the programme or agenda and this is to be done on either a wiki space provided or google docs.

  • Abu to have his comments or input in next week’s meeting. Abu’s review should verify method, process in relation to the objectives of the workshop.

Next meeting

Meeting adjourned to Thursday next week, November 29 at 6pm Kampala time. Saskia will join it from Zambia.
