• What approaches could we use in the actual training design to ensure that the materials are relevant and focused on the objective; e.g. make it interesting for youth; or make the content relevant to the health/HIV-AIDS practical application area?
• What specific content do you advise we include?
Challenge
Designing an effective ICT Module for youths in the health sector(HIV/AIDS) to assist in prevention of HIV/AIDS.
ADVICE:
Divide the youths in separate categories and work with each separately i.e. rural/ urban health workers/ counselors, dropouts/ university students etc.
Create a special curriculum based on ICDL but customized to the special groups.
Identify the ICT training that is applicable in health.
There’s need to match the ICDL Module with the specific skills and knowledge needed to support the HIV/AIDS sector
The youths need to be classified as affected not infected so as to understand their needs more clearly. E.g. infected youths may need training that would foster financial stability.
Include mobile training technology as part of the training (phones, mobile promotion units etc.)
Visit the health centre and find out their needs for the youths.
Use of videos e.g. HIV/AIDS drama.
Customize he training to suit the needs of the client i.e. Ms Access examples should be designed with the HIV/AIDS theme.
It is important to train the youths using Data Base at the health centers.
Include the following modules (theoretical skills.)
- Strategic use of ICT’s
- Health issues (Prevention, treatment, motivation f HIV/AIDS patients etc.)
- Leadership skills (basic)
- Issues of confidentiality and privacy
- People skills and ethical issues.
Security (Computer) should be included as part of the training.
Bring in the expert at the health centers as part of the team of trainers. (during and post training)
Creating of a community of practice which could be electronic and or face to face
Challenge
Change ICT to ICDL
Advice
Find out why ICDL? Is it the most appropriate training for the group?
Examples should be specific to HIV/AIDS but ICDL syllabus shouldn’t be customized.
Train them to use the existing database at the health centre.
Discuss with the client to find out the specific need.
Plan for a follow up to find out what they are doing on the ground. This would be useful to know what is appropriate in the ICDL Module for each participant.
Material should be tailored towards the relevance practicability in the HIV/AIDS sector or what the youths are expected to know. What is it that they are going to use ICTs for?
Let the training flow on the same theme from WP, SS, presentations, databases to information management. This should be based on real life HIV/AIDS examples.
