TITLE: Floyd and ICTs

1. LANDSCAPE
Floyd and ICTs is a true story I want to tell. The period of this story is from 1989 to date.
2. DWELLING PLACE
Floyd’s turn point was at the University of Zambia while studying. He initiated computer lessons and secretarial services in his small apartment where he was being accommodated.
3. CHARACTERS
Mr. B. Hamududu, a lecturer in water engineering at the Natural Resources Development College introduced him to computer by providing access to the computer with some help whenever stranded.
4. CHALLENGE
It was a mandate that all assignments while at the university had to be typed. This prompted him to buy a computer that he used from time to time to typeset his assignments and for others that had no access to the computer at a fee.
5. ACTION
- While Floyd was studying Agricultural education in the year 1989, a lecturer (who happened to be his friend) introduced him to computer applications.
- He was teaching Microsoft Applications as a way of fundraising for his school needs and servicing the printer i.e. Ink for the printer and paper.
- Got involved another friend who was in hardware repair and installation, thus got excited and started assembly and repairing computers.
- Was very involved in research work in Zambia working together with the LINK Centre for Research ICT Africa (RIA) Wits University S. Africa. Thus widening scope and interest in ICT4D.
- ...... And the turning point was the moment when…he discovered that his input in a small room built students who are highly regarded in the ICT field in the country.
- And being at Coldreed, an institution which fully involved in ICT makes him feel that his dream and ambition will be realised and become an ICT guru also.
6. RESOLUTION
- There is nothing impossible; what is important is being determined and forging ahead turning all obstacles into stepping stones to reach the other side.
- To work hard and prove the hypothesis that ICT can bring development to the nation and individuals at a most efficient and cost effective.
